Help create a new event: Girls in ICT Gender Equality

We need the help of female students around the world to help develop a new event celebrating women’s role in communications technologies. Are you in?

“Equality for women and girls is not only a basic human right it is a social and economic imperative. Where women are educated and empowered, economies are more productive and strong. Where women are fully represented, societies are more peaceful and stable.”

UN Secretary General, Ban Ki-moon

Job opportunities in the ICT continue to grow, and many companies are looking to increase the numbers of women in the sector. This means that highly qualified women in technical fields have many great opportunities open to them. Unfortunately teenage girls and young women often never even consider a career in ICTs. Often this is simply down to a lack of awareness about what is out there for a career in ICT.

Attitudes can change. ITU members have agreed to recognize Girls in ICT Days on the 4th Thursday of every April.

Supporting the education of women and girls in the ICT sector is also in line with United Nations Millennium Development Goal 3 to promote gender equality and the empowerment of women. ITU is also helping girls find the information they need by developing a Girls in ICT Portal with links to scholarships, training, internships, contests and awards, tech camps, online networks and, of course, Girls in ICT Day activities. The Girls in ICT Portal will be unveiled during the conference session: GIRLS IN ICT: Thursday, 27 October 14.00 – 15.30 CET.

You can find out more about this area from previous blog posts and the collated resources on the wiki.

If your class are able to take part LIVE during this session on Twitter to challenge and answer the views of the panel make sure you sign up and look out for more information soon.
